Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations Summit in September 2015 identified wastewater management as an important goal (SDG 6.3 - target 6.3), which aimed to halve the proportion of untreated wastewater by 2030. On the basis of the initiative of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT) and the Ministry of Environment of Japan (MOE), the group “Asian Wastewater Management Partnership” (AWaP) was established in 2018 including Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar and the first AWaP Conference took place on July 25, 2018 in Kitakyushu city (Japan). The main objective of AWaP was to hold annual meetings to share information and agree on common perception in the field of wastewater management, to discuss solutions in improving the efficiency of this field. In addition, AWaP also aimed to form models that can address existing challenges in order to accelerate each country's efforts in achieving the SDGs goals related to wastewater by 2030.

At the 2nd AWaP Conference, the parties shared information on each country's efforts in implementing the AWaP action plan, challenges in wastewater management, and discussed the AWaP action plan in the near future. Speaking at the conference, Director of the Technical Infrastructure Department Mai Thi Lien Huong thanked partnership countries, international donors for helping Vietnam in improving the capacity of water drainage and wastewater management.

As a member of AWaP, from 2018 to now, Vietnam has deployed many specific activities to implement the SDGs as well as the tasks in the AWaP Action Plan: strengthen institutional improvement in the field of water drainage and wastewater treatment; organizing conferences and seminars on sustainable drainage, disseminating construction technology of underground pipe jacking; organizing training courses for officials of the government at all levels and related agencies on the management of water drainage and wastewater; organizing research and study classes on environmental management in Japan for local leaders through technical assistance cooperation projects of JICA (Japan). As a result, the management capacity of water drainage and wastewater treatment of the government at all levels in Vietnam has been enhanced, and people's awareness of water environment protection has also enhanced.

Director Mai Thi Lien Huong also said about the challenges facing Vietnam in the field of wastewater management: the drainage system has not been able to respond to the rapid of industrialization and urbanization; limited investment capital; capacity to manage and develop infrastructure for drainage and wastewater treatment is limited. In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic, Vietnam wishes to learn from international experiences and technologies on distributed wastewater treatment systems which are applied to field hospitals, isolation and treatment Covid-19 patients areas.

Ms Mai Thi Lien Huong agreed with the content of the next draft of AwaP and wished the international community and donors to pay attention and support Vietnam in the improve institutional capacity, management capacity and development infrastructure for drainage and wastewater treatment in Vietnam in the coming time.
