Vietnam - Japan webinar on climate change response in the field of drainage

On December 21, 2021, in Hanoi, the Department of Technical Infrastructure (Ministry of Construction of Vietnam) coordinated with the Department of Sewerage and Sewerage Management (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to organize a Vietnam - Japan webinar on climate change response in the field of drainage. Director General Mai Thi Lien Huong and Director General Ryuji UEMATSU co-chaired the webinar.

Speaking at the workshop, Director General Mai Thi Lien Huong said that drainage, wastewater treatment and urban flood control which received special attention from the Government of Vietnam, through the establishment of legal framework, technical standards, promulgating national orientations on drainage and wastewater treatment, perfecting institutions and policies.

The Ministry of Construction has issued a Circular guiding the technical infrastructure for wastewater collection and drainage in urban areas and concentrated residential areas; review and amend legal documents in the field of technical infrastructure, regulations and standards on construction planning in general and technical infrastructure planning in particular towards the goal of sustainable development, socio-economic development associated with environmental protection. Law on Drainage and Wastewater Treatment is expected to develop.

The seminar attracted the participation of many domestic and Japanese  experts

Director General Ryuji UEMATSU highly appreciated the Government of Vietnam and the Ministry of Construction for synchronously implementing many solutions to respond to climate change in the field of drainage, especially realizing the development orientation of Vietnam's urban areas and industrial zones  drainage to 2025 and a vision to 2050 issued by the Prime Minister of Vietnam on April 6, 2016, with many special solutions.

At the workshop, experts from the two countries presented many scientific presentation, modern solutions and technologies responding to climate change in the field of drainage such as: wastewater treatment to protect sustainable tourism in tourist centers; forecast impacts of climate change and sea level rise on Vietnam; anti-flood solutions in Yokohama city of Japan and anti-flood drainage solutions for Vinh city of Vietnam.

Concluding the workshop, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, Director General Mai Thi Lien Huong thanked the experts and delegates for attending the workshop and sharing their comments, suggestions and solutions for the MoC to apply in the process of building and perfecting institutions and laws related to water drainage towards sustainable development, effective response to climate change and sea level rise.
