The HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment said the city is stepping up financial support for garbage collection businesses that need funding to convert rudimentary vehicles into modern ones.

But the garbage vehicles need to meet technical, safety and environmental requirements as stipulated by the Transportation Law.

Specialised vehicles must have the capability to compact household solid waste and leachate storage equipment.

Garbage trucks must not scatter solid waste or emit odours while being transported, and must be sprayed with deodorants after they transport rubbish.

To help collection businesses convert their vehicles to ensure these standards, the department’s Environmental Protection Fund has started offering loans at low interest rates to individuals, organisations and businesses.

It provides up to 70 per cent of the cost of a project for seven years at 3.86 per cent interest.

Tống Nhất Thành of the department said that in addition to modernising waste collection vehicles, Tâm Sinh Nghĩa Company has started construction of a plant to incinerate waste and generate electricity.
