The largest cement producer in Indonesia, Semen Indonesia, plans to invest US$250-300 million to build a new cement plant in Vietnam within five years as part of its business strategy in Southeast Asia.

Construction is scheduled to begin at the beginning of 2015 and the plant will be made operational in three years.

According to the company’s CEO, Dwi Soetjipto, it will enhance the production capacity of its subsidiary in Vietnam, the Thang Long Cement Company (TLCC), by building a new plant with a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year. Construction is scheduled to begin at the beginning of 2015 and the plant will be made operational in three years.

The TLCC has been operating at its top capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per year, so a new plant is necessary to meet the increasing demand in the country, as well as in Singapore, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Soetjipto said.

Semen Indonesia holds 70 percent of shares in the TLCC and has set a target of becoming a leading cement producer in Southeast Asia and expanding to new markets in South Asia including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
