Leading experts fromHo Chi Minh CityandRotterdamcity of the Netherlands gathered at a seminar on March 20 to discuss challenges relating to water in the process of urban development.

At the seminar in HCM City , the Vietnamese and Dutch experts agreed that with the trend of climate change, Ho Chi Minh City is facing many challenges relating to water during its economic development.

Sea level rise has a direct impact on the city’s infrastructure and causes difficulties for its water supplies and drainage, they said.

According to experts, these difficulties are not only seen in HCM City but also in Rotterdam .

Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said climate change is causing challenges for delta regions and addressing them requires the cooperation of all deltas in the world.

HCM City and Rotterdam can share experience in solving and adapting to climate change-related problems, he said.

To deal with climate change and sea level rise, Nguyen Van Phuoc, Deputy Director of the HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said the city has implemented specific action programmes and coordinated with international organisations to seek suitable response measures.

The seminar was part of a cooperative programme between HCM City and Rotterdam on the management of water resources, clean water supplies, urban flooding prevention and drainage, and development of seaports.
