HCMC’s Traffic Development Planning adjusted

The PM has passed amendments to the Transport Development Planning Scheme of Ho Chi Minh City by 2020.

The planning scheme targets to meet rising travel demands of local residents and lower traffic accidents and environmental pollution.

By 2020, public transport (bus, metro and taxi) is expected to handle 20-25% of traffic volume while Individual transport (automobile, motorbike and bicycle) will make up 72-77%.

The city will build two or three metro lines and develop a comprehensive seaport system.

It will also build and operate five expressways including HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway (55km); HCMC-Thu Dau Mot-Chon Thanh Expressway (69km); HCMC-Moc Bai Expressway (55km); Ben Luc-Long Thanh Expressway (58km,) and Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway (76km).

Under the planning scheme, 34 new bridges and one river-crossing tunnel will be constructed.

In addition, Tan Son Nhat International Airport will be upgraded to handle 23.5 million passengers and 600,000 tons of cargo per year since 2013.

The total land for developing the local transport system amounts to 22,305 hectares, representing 22.3% of city’s construction land./.
