Rach Gia recognised as second-class city

A ceremony was held on April 25 to announce that Rach Gia city, Kien Giang province has been recognised as a second-class city and to confer upon it the Labour Medal, first class.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh attended the event, as did leaders of ministries and local branches.

Addressing the ceremony, Deputy PM Ninh commended the efforts of Rach Gia city leaders and residents over the past time. He called on municipal authorities to continue surmounting difficulties and to focus on promoting the city’s potential in an effort to become one of Vietnam’s fishery centres.

Rach Gia, a coastal city in the Mekong Delta region, is an administrative and economic centre as well as an important traffic hub for Kien Giang province. The city is about 250 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, 116 kilometres from Can Tho city and 95 kilometres from the Ha Tien international border gate.

Rach Gia town was recognised as a ‘third-class urban area’ in 2004 and it became Rach Gia city in 2005. The average income per capita is now VND44.6 million (roughly US$2,000) per year, and the percentage of non-agricultural labour in the city centre is above 85%.

Alongside Can Tho, Ca Mau and Long Xuyen, Rach Gia is considered one of the four major cities in the Mekong Delta region with strategic significance to the region’s economic development.
