On June 12, at Ha Noi, a Seminar on “SB Drain (Prefabricated Horizontal Drain) Technology with Sustainable Development - Experiences from Japan” was organized by National University of Civil Engineering (NUCE) - Center for Promoting Japan - Vietnam Civil Engineers Collaboration (CJV) and Thai Miltec International Co., LTD at National University of Civil Engineering.

Scenario of the seminar

The aim of the seminar was to introduce the technology of SB Drain (Prefabricated Horizontal Drain) and the historical change from the conventional method (Sand mat) to the developed method (SB Drain-Prefabricated Horizontal Drain) for PVD method in Japan. This seminar attracted more than 100 participants from Ministries, Divisions, Agencies, Institutes, construction companies as well as representative from Embassy of Japan in Viet Nam and lecturers, students of NUCE. The well-known experts from Japan, Thailand and Viet Nam presented the advanced technologies and shared their experiences in the field of the civil engineering.

Prof. Masaki KITAZUME, Tokyo Institute of Technology presented about the importance of horizontal drainage in vertical drain method –SB Drain. According to Prof. Masaki Kitazume, in the process of socio-economic development at present, horizontal drainage in vertical drain method is an effective solution, providing sustainable development for the country, in particular, this solution is very effective in Vietnam.

Dr. Seah Tian Ho - Senior Geotechnical Expert, Alfa Geotech Co.,Ltd and Visiting Faculty of Asian Institute of Technology presented the content of "Application of Super Board Drain". According to Dr. Seah Tian Ho, Super Board Drain is advanced material technology of Japan which has been applied in reality for many years. These materials have advantages such as lightweight, easy to transport, simple application, easy control, low cost, and this is particularly environmentally friendly materials.

Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang – Lecturer of NUCE explained about TCVN 9355: 2013 (Ground Improvement by prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) – Design, Construction and Acceptance). TCVN 9355: 2013 is upgraded based on 22 TCN 244-1998, 22 TCN 236-1997 and TCXD 245-2000.

After the presentation of experts from Japan, Thailand and Viet Nam at the seminar, there were a lot of comments and questions then. The discussion between experts from Japan, Thailand and Vietnam took place very actively. The atmosphere was very enthusiastic, especially the interaction between experts of Japan and the senior experts of Viet Nam.

According to Prof. Le Duc Thang, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE) "This is very exciting seminar! For us - those who have experience in this field also gained many good ideas, many open issues. For those who do not have much experience can have an opportunity to learn more about this technology, knowledge expansion". The seminar ended very good though the time is limited, but overall, it was part of the benefit and experience for Vietnamese experts as well as students.
